Why Positive Attitude At Workplace Is An Absolute Non-Negotiable

We have all had those days where being at work seems like the worst thing in the world. Even though we know we are lucky to be employed and recognize that life requires hard work, sometimes we just get grumpy and may need a reminder of how to stay positive at work. All the “looking on the bright side” motivational bonanza may sound cheesy. But just positive thinking, smiling and positivity in general are the staples of a positive attitude at work. Being in a bad mood is not just unpleasant, but it’s bad for our health and even detrimental to our productivity.

What if there was a way you could expand your mind and see greater possibilities in life? What if you could develop better skills naturally. When people think of having a positive attitude, they probably think it is little more than plastering a smile on their face and trying to think happy.

Maintaining a positive attitude at work is harder than you think. While it is easy to be positive inside a positive environment, it is much more difficult when surrounded by negativity. Even if your boss isn’t the type to pat you on the back, there are ways to keep from being bummed out every morning when your alarm goes off.

Surround Yourself With Positive People

The old saying “birds of a feather flock together” can be viewed both ways. Either people who are similar naturally find each other, or people in a group become the same over time. Who you hang out with rubs off on you. If you are always with negative people who complain about everything, you will become a complainer and see the world as negative as they do.

You can’t always pick your co-workers, but you can be cautious about how much time you spend with them, and in what setting. If you are stuck with a negative bunch, be careful not to participate in the negativity. Take breaks and go for walks instead of immersing yourself in negative break room drama and gossip.

Tune Out

People’s moods are contagious, so if you find that there is negativity around you, try to separate yourself from it and tune out. If you have a workplace that will let you bring headphones and listen to music while working, do it. This can have a calming and productive effect on you.

It lowers heart rate and increases focus by tuning out outside distractions.

Set And Crush Goals

Having a positive attitude at work means changing things up. It’s important to set goals for yourself and then work toward achieving them.

Goals don’t need to be big or life-altering to leave you feeling motivated and accomplished. Even small, weekly goals are a great place to start. Sit down on Monday and outline what you want to accomplish by Friday – then do it.

Say Yes

Preaching positivity is easy. Putting it into practice and being genuine about it is more difficult. Positive people show their positive attitude in their words, actions and feelings. Positive people radiate differently, just by walking in a room with their energy. It changes the world and people around them.

You can show a positive attitude through the words you use. Become a “yes” person and try new things to see how you do. Give your time and ask coworkers how you can help them out if you have a free moment.

Control Your Language

No, this isn’t about the language police, or trying to swear less. This is about being conscious of the words you use when speaking and thinking. On some level, the language you use every day, both in thought and spoken word, has a cumulative effect on how you think about yourself, your work, and those around you.

This may seem like a silly example, but it might be the difference between seeing your day as filled with tasks, or filled with opportunities. Be aware of how you choose to think and speak at work. Find a positive way to view everything and everyone.

Be Nice To Others

There is a difference between criticism and constructive feedback. Criticism doesn’t help improve performance or stop incorrect actions from happening again, whereas positive feedback allows feedback allows you to correct behavior, and move forward.

That being said, it’s also important to stay away from gossip. While gossip is nearly impossible to avoid, you definitely don’t want to be the one generating or spreading it. Gossip creates suspicion and mistrust. Moreover, no one likes assuming they are being spoken about behind their back.

Manage Your Workload

A less stressed employee is happier and more productive. If you are under too much stress, you can’t perform your job to your fullest potential. This can negatively impact your positivity and productivity.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with your workload, see what you can do to change it. Ask your coworkers if they have suggestions or are willing to trade-off on certain job responsibilities. Go to your boss and see about lightning or adjusting your workload.

Take Breaks

Make sure that you take short breaks throughout the day. You are entitled to them, and a brief walk or change in atmosphere can make a huge difference.

Office workers who take short, frequent breaks during the workday report higher job satisfaction, reduced emotional exhaustion, and greater efforts to take on their responsibilities.

Fake It Until You Make It

No, this is not a call to be a hypocrite. The reality is, though, that sometimes we don’t feel the emotion we want. Sitting around waiting for it to come upon us is a sure way to make certain it never comes. You often have to fake it until the real deal arrives.

Don’t feel happy? Don’t feel excited about a presentation? Fake it. More often than not, the real emotion will show up. You are not going to feel super excited and positive every day, but don’t let that stop you from the behavior that goes along with it, anyway. Drive your emotions, don’t let them drive you.

Take this list of ways to keep a positive attitude. Add to it the tricks you have figured out on your own. And then, do it. Constantly. Do the work of keeping a positive attitude alive at work. It will have a huge impact on your life, and in the lives around you.
